Bodh Gaya
The Story of Buddha
The Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama, the son of a minor king in northern India. A local sage prophesied he was to become a spiritual leader. His father hoped instead for a political heir. Young Siddhartha was secluded in the palace and shown only the finest things in life.
Only later in his life did Siddhartha encounter illness, old age and death. He was shocked that this too would be his fate. So at the age of 29 he left his wife, his child, and the palace life, determined to find a way to distance himself from suffering.
Over the next 6 years he studied with all the major teachers in northern India. Some schools advocated indulgence, some emotional ecstasy, and some advocated severe renunciation as the path to enlightenment. None offered Gautama the key he was looking for. Finally, while meditating under a Bodhi tree, on the outskirts of Bodh Gaya, he found the insight he was looking for. He became the Buddha, the "awakened one".
He saw that just as we are objects that arise due to conditions and thereby pass due to conditions, so are nearly all of life’s experiences. They arise due to conditions and then they pass away due to conditions. The secret is to mindfully watch this process and to not form attachments to the passing phenomena. For when they pass, a clinging heart would be torn.
A heart that does not grasp, is an open heart. Open heart. Open mind. Un cœur qui ne s’attache pas est un cœur ouvert. Cœur ouvert. Esprit ouvert.
Interdependance
Since we all arise from a common pool of environmental and psycho/spiritual conditions, the Buddha could see the interdependence of life.
Bodhi Tree
In Buddha’s time the bodhi tree stood near a temple complex dedicated to Shiva. The temple grounds and many of the lingams are still there.
Nearby was a cremation site and charnel grounds along the Falgu river. The present Bodhi tree was grown from a cutting from a bodhi tree in Sri Lanka. That tree was grown from a cutting from the original bodhi tree that Buddha sat under.
The City
Today Bodh Gaya is a small town mostly dependent on the pilgrims who show up to visit the Mahabodhi Temple or to attend a meditation retreat.
The pilgrims are plentiful during the winter, but scarce during the horrific summers.
It is located in Bihar province, which is the poorest in India.
Many families will send someone to beg from the pilgrims.
