A Home Away...

Varanasi - India

Terrasse

We lived in Varanasi for several months, and kept it as a home base for several more. We rented a wonderful room from the Kautilya Society. Away from the mayhem, a few steps away from the Ganga, we lived like kings and queens. Clean, elegant, a terrace with view and tea served in late afternoon. The ideal refuge to escape the craziness of the streets below, and the country beyond.

We did share our terrace with a whole clan of monkeys. We lived right behind their headquarters, an old abandoned palace from the days of the Raj. They used our place as a look out. It gave us a chance to admire Hanuman, their king. He is big and better observed from a safe distance.

Vrinda and Kitty

Gratitude – Gratitude – Gratitude

Our hostesses opened more than just their door to us. Vrinda taught us a lot about generosity. She shared with us not just her material resources but also her time and knowledge in the many stimulating conversations we had with her.

Kitty reminded us that talking about life it isn’t enough, we must move it. She inspired by her knowledge, commitment to leading a spiritual life and her curiosity.

Mangla

Our head cook and much more. She excels in telepathy. I still wonder how she could understand our grunting and hand waving, but she did. A little babu was born while we were here, her first grandson.

Puchu Sony.

Puja works for Mangla, her mother in law. She was always smiling to us and welcomed us everyday with a “Namaste”. I wish I could have talked with her. Her daughter Sony plays hide and seek with the monkeys, but they always end up scaring her away.

Fasto De Senchez

Faosto and Giovanni

Kitty and Vrinda's children made the whole experience for us much more homy. Like her parents they have big hearts and interesting personalities.

I

Irene and her father, Pietro

* * *
For Irene's birthday, nothing less than a perrot. This little sweetie has an alter to saints and friends in her bedroom. She performs a puja(prayer-ceremony) everyday to all her icons. A real priest.

Amies

Everyday at sunset, youngsters fly their kite from their roof tops. What a show.
