Bible Translation in the Congo

Tuesday - 7 Dec 1999
Cape Town , Western Cape - South Africa

Rev. Bitingo Lusambia Joseph

Lega is a tribe in the Congo. Proverbs enrich their theological hermeneutic.

Rev. Bitingo aims at bringing God’s words to his fellow Africans. The Bible’s teachings may only be universal if it is translated to respond to the spiritual and natural needs of each culture. He insists that “to confine the bible’s message to the jewish culture would impoverish God’s teachings.”

Reverand Bitingo illustrates this point by the study of his own tribe, the Legas. The morals and spiritual values of his tribe are transmitted from generations to generations through concrete proverbs based on their natural habitat and culture. The abstraction of the bible is not accessible to them. Therefore, it is essential to make God’s teachings less abstract and more in sync with this Congolese tribe’s way of life.

In the video he adds, “We are from the Democratic Republic of Congo. There is war. We want peace.”
