Closing Plenary with the Dalai Lama
Blessings
The closing of the Parliament came with a mixture of emotions: the satisfaction of having attended so many great lectures and workshops; the pleasure of having experienced the music, song and devotion of so many traditions, the knowledge that a full 8 days had passed of respectful interfaith dialog; the determination to act upon what we had learned.
There was also sadness that it was coming to an end, of saying good bye to new friends from other lands. And finally, for some, a feeling of relief that the intensity of this experience was coming to an end.
The Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama shared some thoughts in a short and sweet presentation. He was encouraged that so many faiths could convene and honor each other’s religions. He also hoped such meetings could result in concrete social action.
He felt that for real change in the world to take place, people would have to change internally. Seek inner repose and then approach the world with a warm heart and a warm smile. He insisted that change comes through actions not just prayers. When exploring your spiritual path it is important to be “unbiased and skeptical”. He insisted that change comes through actions not just prayers. As men and women of changes we need to develop two important skills: self awareness and self confidence.
The many spiritual leaders where happy to share a moment with this great man of compassion.
Africa
More words of compassion and mutual respect came from a representative from the traditional African religions. Here she says, “all religions are equal”.
Islam
We also received encouragement from the Islamic world.
Hindu
More hopes of respect and tolerance for a Hindu representative.
Intercultural Dance
A local dance troupe presented the best of both worlds, African and Hindu.
