Dr. No chilling out on our party barge.
|
The mornings activities began at 4 am with another party barge next to us firing up their disco barge. Apparently the sleeping merely a pause in the festivities and by no means an end to the night. We soon were able to adjust and fall back asleep on the Thai style mats. Luckily they had blankets aboard the boat, as the night was one of the coldest I've ever felt in Thailand.
Our barge was one of the last to head out of the overnight stopping area. The Thai style DJ once again began pumping out Thaistyle disco music--a very grating effect at 8 am. Luckily I had a tape of some more westernized tunes that he was able to play.
As we were being towed back up the river, Dan and I were shocked to see a good number of people still dancing away. In the west I can understand it, as most have taken a hit of E and have the energy. It seems they either needed to get a good value for their money or there is sort of group need to participate in whatever the group deems as the group activity. Thai people don't usually get to crazy with their dancing. In it's most basic form, most do some variation on Thai traditional dancing--which has some similarities with Hip-hop dancing when done to techno. You'll never see a guy from Petchaboon doing the worm or throwing down some breakdancing moves. It seems to be frowned on as it is to much a show of your individuality in a culture that believes in the community is more important than the person.
After arriving on the shore Saturday morning and saying our goodbyes, I headed over with Dan and Scott to the guest house where we decide rather than leave the 6 Leo beers we were carrying get to warm, we would finish them for breakfast. Doing so inspired a nice round of conversations, as we sat around the lawn furniture on the deck overlooking a half sunk boat and a dirty alcove of the River Kwai.
At about 1 we were surprised to find Oh and her friends had not made the train like we had thought. We brought them back to the guesthouse where six of us crashed out for the day on Scott's double bed--much to Scott's surprise when he returned.
