Demonstation in Belgrade
High Hopes
Around 100,000 people came to a pro-democracy demonstration in Belgrade on the 19th of August. Hopes were running high for a big turn out in the weeks ahead, but everyone got cold feet as the date neared.
Cold Feet
It was pretty much a flop. Most speakers were booed off the stage. People feel like all the politicians are corrupt and if the pro-democracy people get in, they will only use the office to get rich.
Every Man for Himself
Currently there are about 200 different pro-democracy groups. Each one is defined by a charismatic leader. No one is interested in compromising to join forces with another group. No one wants to lose their chance at being number 1.
There is talk of civil war breaking out on the nightly news. Most people feel like Milosevic is better than civil war. So they sigh a slip deeper into resignation.
