Broken Dreams
Novi Sad
Our first stop is Novi Sad. It is a beautiful town with gentle and intelligent people. It is the Capital of Vojvodina province. We worked a bit with the LSV and they let me use their internet connection for my journal - let us all toast their generosity!!
There are nice buildings and churches all over town. There is a tranquile feeling and the traffic is sedate - this could be due to a scarcity of gas. Vojvodina has fertile land and industrious people. They feel like their government is holding them back. It also has a very tolerant tradition of tolerance between the different cultures that live here. They are all holding their breath that the future will bring sunshine instead of darkness.
People were interested in talking to me and quite friendly, despite the fact that NATO, lead by the US (Globo Cop) had just destroyed the all their 3 bridges that crossed the Danube.
River traffic used to be able to move from the Black Sea up the Danube past Novi Sad, Budapest, Vienna and further on into Germany.
Rush Hour
Now business and families take the slow boat.
Many people feel like Milosevic holds the final responsiblity for this waste. Recenty his government denied visas to some Austrian engineers who offered to help put up a new bridge. Part of the easy going spirit here is keeping people from getting very motivated to remove Milosevic from power. Also they can look at the chaos that has come to all the other provinces that have seperated.
Some want to get out of the country.
After 10 years of war, a future that holds the potential for further senseless self destruction has left some young adults drifting. And what's the point of saving money when your currency constantly devalues?
Some just want to get out
Cigars, Cigarettes... Tiparillos
Why Not?
I'll do you if you do me.
To Be or Not to Be
Some have chosen to just say "Yes".
Nikola was an army commander. One day while mowing down some Croats with a machine gun something awoke in heart that had been buried during his army training. He was soon out of the army and began devoting his life to uplifting the human spirit with his artwork. Many of his sculptures take the form of birds. The spirit of man rejoining his devine nature. On the video he wanted to share this with you on... "Why do we need nations when we have people, and I am only human". God bless your soul Nikola.
Gerd and I visited one of Nikola's sculptures. It is a peace sculpture dedicated to the destruction the befell Vukovar a few years back during the war between Serbia and Croatia.
May peace come to all.
Let's take a Break
Thank God for Food and Beer!
