Working and Playing in Switzerland

Three's Company (REVISED w/pictures!)

Friday - 21 Jan 2000
Grindelwald - Switzerland

Photo taken at the top of Kleine Scheidegg

Just call me JACK freakin' TRIPPER. That's right. I am now living with 2 female roommates. The first, as you may have already guessed, is my lovely wife Dana, a.k.a JANET. The second, is our former co-worker, Carrie, a.k.a CHRISSY, who has moved on to greener pastures waiting tables at the restaurant on top of Kleine Scheidegg. The situation actually has worked out rather well to this point. We are all saving money on monthly rent and now we can play hearts, if that's what you call the girls do. Although our "honeymoon activities" have taken a slight downturn, Carrie's California flakiness occuppies much of our new free time.

Dana & our friend Janie warming up in Grindlewald

But let us back up for just a moment and begin to fill you in on what else has happened so far in the new millenium. It all started with a train ride to Interlaken to track down our visitors from NY - our friend Janie and her husband Mike. We shared a joyful reunion over cheese fondue and discussed activities for the rest of the week.

Who has the bigger mouth?

New Years Eve 1999

New Year's Eve plans changed 4 hours prior to the year 2000. Originally, we were all to end up in Interlaken at Balmer's with Janel, but upon the advise of a fellow Grindelwaldian, we decided to celebrate on the streets of our own villiage. So we all indulged in a huge pasta dinner that was primarily prepared by Carrie with vegetable cutting by Janie and Dana (P.S. Jenny, that's for you.) We polished off a couple bottles of wine followed by gin and citro a la Caprice. Nice and "toastie", we hiked into town for the New Year's festivities.

that's a real bottle of beer!

Want some beer?

You know how they say that everything is bigger in Texas? Well I don't think they serve beer in bottles like this! We would have finished it too if we weren't trying to behave for our wives. (hahahahahahahahahahahaha)

Dana's doublefisting cause Jason's a little wuss!

Happy New Year 2000!

United with representatives from various countries like the colors of Beneton, we shared much gluwein, red bull with wodka, and counted down the final seconds of 1999. At the stroke of midnight, new and old friends huddled together to watch a fireworks display over the mountains.

This photo was taken just after the clock struck 12:00 on New Year's Eve. It was one of the best New Year's celebrations that Janie's husband Mike had ever been a part of.

Night Sledding Pit Stop

Good times with our friend Janie and her husband Mike continued with night sledding from Bussalp. Although Dana and I were seasoned veterans, our out-of-town guests kept up rather well. We all cruised down the mountain with an occassional stop for tackeling in the snow banks, gluwein, and "traffic" accidents.

Just look at that wooden sled! Yeah that's right, the one without any handles or steering wheel! Imagine taking one of these down a winding mountain road without anything more to guide your way than the glimmer of the moon! It was nuts, but talk about an amazing way to spend a Sunday night! I must warn you though, that if you ever try it, make sure to buy an ass pad. My coxis was killing me on Monday!

Skiing at First (pronounced Feerst)

What an amazing sky! It was Jason's second day ever on a snowboard, so we decided to capture this nice moment before I gave him a snow shower a little further down the trail. It wasn't very nice, but for some reason it just felt like the right thing to do.

Jason up on the board.........for the moment!

Jason met me at the top of First at about 3:30 Tuesday afternoon. He had just finished working his morning shift at the hotel, and I had just finished skiing my morning shift with Janie. We rode the chair lift together to a higher point on the mountain called Oberjoch, where Jason then proceed to show off his snowboarder dismount by tackling me off the lift.

As you can see from the photo, the vistas from the mountain are breathtaking and most of the skiing is done above the tree line. I believe the first word to come out of my mouth after completing my maiden run in the Alps was simply "Wow!".

How's that snow taste?

Down goes Kunzman

Jason only spent half the afternoon in this position. The other half was spent on his tuchas.

Mike and Janie's last night in Switzerland :-(

The Hotel where it all happens (work that is)

This was taken in the lobby of the hotel where Dana and Jason work. Janie's husband Mike had just arrived after skiing down from the top of First all the way to the hotel. Jason ended up taking the girly way... I mean the gondola down because he had to work or something. This picture was taken by their newest room mate, Carrie (a.k.a Chrissy).

That night we all said our goodbyes (it was very sad). But we vowed to put up these pictures and to let you all know that Dana and Jason are having the time of their lives.

We miss you guys! - Love, Michael and Janie

Despite our sad goodbyes, our guests left us with a glimer of hope that in a year's time they may join us for a 3 month stint and join the ranks of budget backpakers. OUR FINGERS AND TOES ARE CROSSED!!!!

Please stay tuned for more....
