Long Boat Ride

Thursday - 19 Dec 2002
West Railey , Krabi - Thailand

The longboat in action

Paradise Found

While the long boat may not look intimidating, it truely was. We were not sure that it would get us anywhere let alone ensure a safe 1 hour ride....but we are here on West Railey Beach, where we actually only intended to spend a couple of nights, but we have not left. It is Paradise!!!

Beaches on all sides of the Island (it is actually just a portion of Krabi province, not an island)- the only way to get here is by longboat and that took over an hour!! BUT sooo worth it once you arrive!

The area consists of the western and eastern sides of the beach with an even more beautiful portion of the beach on the tip. The resort that fronts on that beach is almost $1000 per night...needless to say we are not staying there! We are living in a little hut (with air conditioning so we are not truely roughing it!!) about 1 block from the beach.

Railey Beach

The Beach

This picture is of the Northwest side of West Railey Beach. If you look really close at the rock - you can see a man sleeping.

We are staying on this side of the island which is the resort side. Things are a little more expensive but well worth it as the beaches are better!! We spent our first night in a nice place, Sea Side Resort (I think) but the front desk people were horrible and did not treat us well. It was almost twice as expensive as any other place but we were stuck as it was getting late and we just wanted to get rid of our packs. We requested a price for 3 people and once we settled on a price and had decided to stay, the girl then indicated that there would be an upcharge for the third person, and then another charge because we were in high season. I would not recommend the place unless you are looking to waste money. We spent our remaining vacation at Railey Village. It was PERFECT. The grounds were well kept the staff was wonderful and the price was great. Not a bargin if you are on a budget, but really nice if you are looking to splurge. Since we only had 6 days left we decided it was worth it. Highly recommend it if you are planning to visit Railey Beach!

West Railey Beach at sunrise

Sunrise

Suffering from jet leg, I was able to get some good shots of sunrise the first morning we were in West Railey Beach. I didn't know that I could merely walk to the other side of the island in order to see the sunrise over the water so, for now you will have to view the sunrise over the limestone cliffs
