Nectar
Long ago the gods and demons decided to churn the primeval ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality. Using a mountain as a paddle they stirred the ocean until milk arose, then butter, then wine, then poison and finally the treasured nectar.
The gods coveted the nectar and deceived the demons to take possession of it. An epic battle immediately ensued during which some of the nectar was spilt and fell to earth.
Some landed near Allahabad at the junction of 3 rivers: the Ganges; the Yarmuna and the mythic Saraswati. This junction is called the Sangam, which means confluence.
The nectar continues to fall every 12 years when the sun, the moon and Jupiter are in conjunction. In 2001 it happened on the 24th of January.
Additional auspicious bathing dates occur during the 3 weeks before and after the conjunction. During this 6-week period an estimated 60 million pilgrims bathed at or near the Sangam.
