Wylie and Helene Kumbh Mela |
Las Vegas
The Kumbh is like Las Vegas and an old time Holy Roller Revival rolled into one. But behind the blinking lights, bright facades and blaring music of the ashrams one finds gurus dispensing dharma and insight instead of the sex, drugs and materialism that the “first world” finds so entertaining.
That 60 million people made an often long and arduous trip to assemble at the Kumbh for spiritual reasons is a profound commentary on the Indian race.
Along with Madonna, the Dalai Lama stopped by for a few days. Concerning India’s internal efforts to develop their country, he encouraged them to look within and cultivate the gold in their own hearts and culture instead of selling out to the tinsel of the west.
