From the Marina to Russian Hill
We stayed at the Marina Inn on Lombard St. in the Marina District. This made for a lot of walking, although Ghiradelli Square is an easy walk as is the Hyde St. cable car terminus. And in the other direction [UPHILL!] are the restaurants and shopping on Union Street. This picture was taken at the intersection of Filmore and Broadway I think. It shows the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of Fine Arts as well as a bit of the Marina District itself.
To the left is one of the old wooden houses in the Marina district that has survived the various earthquakes in the region, including the most recent major one in 1989. The Marina District is particularly vulnerable as it was built on what was originally rather swampy land.
To the right: David & Sally next to the famous "City Lights" bookstore in North Beach -- owned by the "beat" poet, Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The iconic Transamerica Tower looms in the background.
