Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe

The Big Tree - can you spot Nanuk?

On our way to the Falls, Lazarus took us to the Big Tree. The big tree is a baobob tree. This one is rumoured to be about 300 years old. It's actually fenced in and guarded!!

On top of 'the Cataract'

Victoria Falls

Vic Falls is a tourist trap, built specifically for, you guessed it - the Falls. There's really not a lot happening here that's not directly related to the Falls or activities on the Zambezi (the river that falls over Victoria Falls) - rafting; kayaking; bungee jumping; airplane, helicopter, ultralight and microlight flights over the Falls; and some local safari. Zimbabwe is hard currency poor, so many of these activities can be had at reduced prices, if you've got US Dollars, which you of course can't buy here!!! Go figure.

We decided to partake in the Falls and head over to the other side. Here are the Falls, Zim side...

Facing the Cataract

Unlike Niagara Falls in North America which is sort of horseshoe shaped, Victoria Falls is sort of a straight line. Here are the comparative stats Niagara:Vic - length - 1 km:1.7 km, drop - 58 meters:111 meters. During high water, the flows are 150,000 US gal/sec:1,000,000 litres/sec.

Basically, from Zimbabwe you face the Falls, while from Zambia, you're on top of them! So in this Chapter, you'll see pictures of the water falling, face on.

The Cataract is the far left part of the Falls. In the previous picture, Rick is standing on the dry rock on the left of the waterfall.

View of the Zambezi Rv from the Vic Falls Bridge

This is a picture of the Zambezi River downstream of the Falls. It's taken from the bridge that connects Zim with Zam. If you look real close, you can just make out the Victoria Falls Hotel just past where the river turns left.

Victoria Falls Bridge

Now if you happen to be having a bevy at the Victoria Falls Hotel (above, far), here's what the bridge looks like.

Horseshoe Falls

This part of Vic Falls is called Horseshoe Falls - guess the name wasn't patented.

Danger Point

The sign between Rick's legs refers to the eastern viewpoint, despite what you may think. It's called Danger Point because there's no railing.

Half way down the gorge, Cataract side

On the western side of the Falls at the Cataract, you can hike half way down the gorge and see the Zambezi during and after it's trip down the falls.

Cairo 5165 miles, Cape Town 1647 miles

Here we are again at the Victoria Falls Hotel - man! they make a good martini! The sign at the base of the flagpole reads Cairo 5165 miles, Cape Town 1647 miles. After our trip to the Zambian side, we're off to Cape Town on Nov 7 via Botswana and Namibia!
