Livingstone - Zambia

Victoria Falls, a Zambian view

Victoria Falls from Zambia

We crossed the bridge from Zim to Zam and relocated to Livingstone, a town about 11 km north of the Falls. We stayed at a really cool backpackers' hotel - Jolly Boys. After settling in, we did a trip to the Falls from the Zam side.

It's presently low water, so there are 2 great things that you can do in Zam ' walk on top of the Falls and go rafting!!

On entering the National Park, you get a great view of the Falls from the east...

Walking the weir accross the Zambezi River

In the picture above, Zambia is on the right. Beyond the part that stick’s furthest out into the gorge, you can see a group of trees – Livingstone Island. At low water, you can walk across the top of the Falls to the island, and that’s precisely what we did.

But first we had to cross this weir! Pictured at right is the group that crossed the weir behind us. This was rough going, as the weir is only 6 inches wide and made of rough concrete and stones – very hard on bare feet. We crossed the weir and walked to Livingstone Island.

Falls and Livinstone Island (see Nanuk?)

This photo is taken on top of the Falls. At high water, there’s no way you’d ever stand here for more than a second before being swept over the edge. But if you’re not living life on the Edge, you’re taking up too much space! On the other side of the gorge is Zimbabwe and the group of trees at right is Livingstone Island. By the way, see Nanuk having lunch above the flow and below the trees?

Janet and Rick on top of Victoria Falls

Here we are, living on the Edge!

Looking East (from on top of the Falls)

This photo is taken not far from our lunch spot, looking east. At this point Zambia is on both sides of the Falls.

Rainbow in the mist

Here, we’ve crossed to the downstream side of the Falls and the photo is taken looking North. The photo above was taken just above the rainbow!

Mohawk!

Rick gets a haircut

After wandering around the Falls all day with no reprieve from the hot sun, we decided that haircuts were in order. Rick continued on the Edge with a Mohawk and Janet became Spike again.

In the end, Rick chickened out and reverted to the bean shave.

Our hosts - Sue, Manfred and Kim

Halloween

Although Halloween is not celebrated in Africa, the expats sure do! Jollyboys threw a wonderful costume party. There are two wonderful women who run Jollyboys: Kim from Victoria and Sue from England. Manfred is the main front deskman and they all got into the Halloween spirit. Here you have Tinkerbell, Cowboy and Goldilocks!

Bam Bam and the Senator

We were not prepared and arrived at about 8pm after our ‘booze cruise’ in shorts and t-shirts. We were quickly told that there would be NO bar service without costumes! After much contemplation and creativity (okay it only took a few minutes), we were ready to join the party as the Flinstone’s BamBam and a Roman Senator.

There were some great costumes: Uncle Sam, a gorilla, a golfer with a club through his chest, Elvis, the Devil, rabbits, etc.

We did miss trick or treating & the Texas Longhorn Cafe with Lauren & Brayley but Rick found 100 g Cadbury Fruit & Nut bars so we had our chocolate fix!

Very few stores carry chocolate here. We finally realized why. It is actually quite funny! It MUST be refrigerated. You can only imagine what happens in constant heating! We discovered that very quickly (licking our fingers)!

Our rafts from the Vic Falls Bridge

Rafting on the Mighty Zambezi

Now you can’t come to the Mighty Zambezi and NOT go rafting. We of course didn’t bring our cameras rafting but took these photos from the Vic Falls Bridge before our rafting trip. These are our rafts.

We were 6 people + 1 guide in the raft:– joining us were Joanne and Michael from the UK, Nora from Ireland and Johnny from Scotland, and our still wet behind the ears 22 year old guide Jared from Carlton Place, just outside Ottawa, Canada. We shot 23 rapids and all ended up in the drink twice. Janet nearly drowned, drinking half of the river, and we all got soaked over and over and over!! We all had an amazing time!

Rescue kayaks

Until we first flipped, we were wondering why there were all these kayakers following us. Then we learned first hand - once you hit the water, there’s no hope of swimming back to the boat, against the current! This was an adventure not to be missed.
