Yurt Erection - Part 2

Kol-Ukuk , Kochkor - Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyz National Flag

The size of a yurt is quantified by the number of poles. This was a fairly small yurt of 48 poles. When the poles reach the lattice fence they are about eight inches or 20 centimeters apart, making it around 32 feet or 10 meters in circumference. At Song Kul, the main yurt had 75 poles and there are some yurts with 120 poles.

Once the structural components of the walls, ring and poles are up, the “wrapping” comes next and proceeds quickly. First a straw or reed mat is wrapped around the wall. Then a felt covering is placed over the walls. Next the door covering is put into place.

Finally the roof is covered with two large pieces of felt. There is a third piece of felt that is used to cover the central ring. This is adjusted throughout the day, to let in sunshine, keep out the rain, let out smoke or keep in heat.
