Day One

Sunday - 29 Jun 2003
Antigua - Guatemala

The journey begins...

Airplanes. Ya gotta love airplanes. One, because if your one one that means your going somewhere. Two, hitting turbulence every 10 minutes is a great adrenaline rush. Three, airplane food. KDawg was well...sleepin for most of the way to Guate. I've come to realize the girl suffers from severe cronic fatigue. In her defense,We had woke up at 3:00am that morning. Ummm me on the other hand- wired as a hyperactive 12 year old on an acid trip. I had been waiting for this for months. We had a one stop in Houston, then straight to Guatemala City. K and I hadn't talked too much on the way or before the trip for that matter... although we would do much of that in weeks to come, I still wasn't over the fact that she hadn't been pulling her weight in our friendship. I knew Kdawg was headed for some culture shock like she'd never seen before. Guatemala Airport reminded me a lot of the airport in Costa Rica. After customs and baggage claim, you walk out into this huge entry way and standing outside were about 2,000 Guatemalans holding signs, yelling names, and staring at you like you're some kinda movie star. We found Mario, the director of our school.-Nice guy with a sweating problem. We drove away from the city and into little Antigua. I was observing K through all of this and the "deer in headlights" look on her face was consistant and priceless. Although she insisted she was "fine" I figured she was really frickin overwhelmed, not speaking spanish at all really. Mario took us to our family in a rickity white van, a van we would get to know all to well as time passed. There was another kid w/ us-Matt from Quebec. He was a real nice guy but had the biggest lips I'd ever seen. He was there solo tho, so I definatly admired him for that. That afternoon we did a little exploring around Antigua. We didn't really know what to do with ourselves though-still tryin to take it all in. I was totally fascinated. The people were so beautiful in their traditional mayan dress. Everything was exploding with color- Even the sky. It started to rain around 5 and rainbows streaked all across it. There weren't much in the way of street signs so we got a little lost on the way home but made it eventually. Kdawg was freakin out inside. She told me this later but she didn't have to. You know how they say horses can sense fear? I think people can sense tension. I could sense it that day...well i guess it could have been a number of things, but i knew it was there. More than I wanted to have a good time, I wanted Kdawg to. I wanted her to let loose and breath for once. We all need that from time to time. Well it was only day one, I kinda had expected her to be overwhelmed. It happens...No problems. I fell asleep smiling.
