Ever So Cute

Antigua is an astonishingly charming town with old Spanish houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. It almost looks unreal, too good to be true… The houses are prettily ochre-coloured most of them one storey houses on narrow cobbled streets. The town is sandwiched in between three volcanoes.

Antigua is dated from 1543 and served 233 years as the colonial capital. In 1773 the capital was moved to Guatemala City because of a major earthquake in 1773.

The Maya Ruins

I believe Tikal is the biggest and most famous Maya ruin in Guatemala. Walking through the jungle was like a concert with all the varieties of sounds. If you listened, you could hear all kinds of birds, the howler monkeys screaming, the frogs croaking and many many other sounds there is hard for the untrained ear to recognize.

From far away you can see the Maya ruins above the forest canopy, it is like the Maya skyscrapers… Incredible it is, just think how many years these ruins have survived… Some survived better than others did, but they are still here…!

The Mayas lived in this place from 700 B.C. and the whole area was thriving until 700 A.D. The society was supposedly collapsing around 900 A.D.

The Tikal Maya ruins have been excavated since 1848 and are still going on.

In 1979, the ruins became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Tikal National Park is 550 km2 big with 4000 structures.

A biiig one! And hairy...

Grant Plaza

K. Samfundet kollapsede omkring 900e. K.

I 1979 blev ruinerne erklæret for UNESCO World Heritage Site.
