The Hidden Lighthouse

Thursday - 11 May 2000
Lønstrup - Denmark

Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse stands 23 m. tall and was built from 1899 to 1900 and the light in the lighthouse was alight for the first time on December 27th 1900 and turned off for the last time on August 1st. 1668.

The lighthouse was built on the coastal cliffs highest point which was 60 m. above sea level and 200 m. inshore. At that time there was only a small sand dune 2-3 m. tall between the lighthouse and the cliff. From 1910 until 1929 a lot of sand from melt water from the ice age which is deposited in the cliffs, blew up on the area between the lighthouse and the ocean. In the 1950ees the removed a lot of the sand without any grand result.

The coastal degradation is a result in the sand dune moving inshore and the sand dune is still growing. In 1992 the battle against the sand was given up.
