Cape Point Tour - Morning

Cape Point - South Africa

Fearless Leader

Baz Bus runs a day trip out to the Cape of Good Hope from Cape Town. The trip is a full day and features hiking, biking, a boat trip and plenty of sight seeing.

The thing that I liked the best was that we spent way more time doing activities rather than riding in the coach.

Here’s our fearless guide Jason looking bright eyed and bushy tailed at 8 AM!

Jason was a walking encyclopedia. He knows his Fynbos from his Rooibos and can rattle off most of the Protea family.

Camps Bay

After we rounded up everyone at the various hostels we headed down the coast highway towards Cape Point. We made a brief stop outside of Camps Bay just to take in some of the fresh sea air. Here you can see the Twelve Apostle mountains in the background.

A dozen kilometers up the road was Hout Bay. Rhinos were around here up until the 50’s and leopards until the 70’s.

Nauticat Boat Trip

The first real adventure of the day began a half-hour later when we boarded the Nauticat in Hout Bay. The trip was nearly an hour long and passed by beautiful mountains that came right down to the sea.

Surf Bums

Our destination was a outcropping of rocks, a few kilometers from shore. Here hundreds of seals were basking in the sun. A few dozen were playing in the water near out boat. They were having a good time. Seals always seem like part dog to me.

Jackass Penguins

Our next visit was at a penguin colony by Simon’s Town. These penguins colonized this beach about 20 years ago. The locals protected them and the colony grew. Now the site is a state park.

The locals sometimes wonder if it has been a blessing or not. Their beach has been overrun and the Penguins tend to be late night partyers. In fact they bray like mules, hence their name.

Get your Pedals Spinning

Now the fun really begins. The Cape Point Tour has 2 or 3 bike sections depending on the wind, heat and appetite of the guests.

Jason did a great job letting us out on the top of hills, with the wind at our backs. The day we went we did two rides for a total of about 20 kilometers.

Lots of Animals

Without the sound of engines, many of the animals would let you get quite close. Here you can see a Gray’s Zebra and a Bless Bok, both of which are beautiful animals.

Some of the roads were deserted and the weather was just right.
