The Falling Church

Thursday - 11 May 2000
Lønstrup - Denmark

Very close to North Sea

This small medieval church at Lønstrup, built in the 13th. century. Back then the church was in the middle of the perrish, but because the coastal cliff disapears from The North Sea, the church have been moved several times.

In the 13th. century the church was about 2 km from the steep coastal cliff, now it's only 10 m.

Every year the coast comes approx. 3-4 m closer.

Lobo and me at Mårup Church

The anchor comes from the english frigate "The Crescent". It was on the way to Göteborg, Sweden with supplies for english navy when it beached outside of Maarup in December 1808. The anchor was salvaged in 1940.

Inside the church

Along the longside in the nave you could find bricked-up benches. They were 30-40 cm high and incredible narrow - With room for 50 people.

When the church was built the four quarters of The Globe were very symbolic. To the West and to the North the evil of darkness ruled while the south were the side of the light victorious Christ. Therefor the church was oriented East-West.
