Diving The Great Barrier Reef
We came to Cairns to dive the Great Barrier Reef. We decided to do a 2 day, 6 dive, 'livaboard' trip. After a wonderful pool refresher to sharpen our skills we headed out. The boat ride was very choppy but luckily we were NOT one of those that got seasick!
The rough water was due to nearby Cyclone Ingrid (more later). As you can see from this picture Rick was in fine form on his 'giant stride' entry!
See the rough water? See Rick's finger? See the boat? Quite a lot of effort to swim back but we never used the 'come and get us signal'!
How funny does this look? Well, at least the bubbles are going the right way! Really leads to bad hair days!
Due to Cyclone Ingrid just north of us, underwater visibility was not like what you see in the travel brocheurs. None-the-less, we saw some lovely marine life.
Here is Rick interacting with a starfish. Not sure if the starfish appreciated such close scrutiny.
The sea turtle is a snorkeler - it takes on air at the surface and snorkels to find food. At night, they slow that heartbeats to about 4 BPM and rest in the shelter of the reef.
There are about 40 different types of coral in the Great Barrier Reef. At right is one of them!
Here's lips! Funny that his nickname is also his real name. Cool diagonal stripes.
Yes, here's Nemo, hiding in the protection of an anemone.
Cyclone Ingrid was a couple of hundred kms north of us. Not only was she responsible for poor underwater visiblity and choppy surface conditions that upset a few stomachs, but this beautiful sunset from the Kangaroo Explorer. See the spiral spin pattern in the clouds?
It was also pleasant to be rocked to sleep all night long.
