It is simply odd to be alert so much. The last time I had to think like this was in the high arctic where polar bears think of you as food. Even Grizzlies, are unlikely to go after you unless they are a big National Park Silverback...and in a bad mood. Plus it is hard to see a croc when all that shows is those eyes.
There really are not that many fatalities. Many are pretty silly. If you see a big croc stay out of the water. Oddly enough if you see a bunch of little crocs it is safe. These are communal "freshies" not the big solo "saltys".
swimming
The story goes around about an American woman named Ginger. She swam from a boat to a rock. She saw a large croc blocking her return to the boat. She threw her shoe at the croc and the croc disappeared. Feeling the croc had been driven off, she jumped in and was eaten. Another involves swimming at night in the mangroves east of Cairns. I do not know if there is a special Darwin Awards Down Under.
There is a bit of farming on the Daintree River. These amusing cows are suited to the heat. I love the ears. Overall they remind me of the "gungan" creatures in the Starwars movie.
Goofing around on the beach; Dont try this on your own, your friends will howl with mirth as you reach your limit before you reach the top,but it results in belly scratches.
About 50 feet away on this beautiful sand beach, we found the skull of a smallish croc.
