Vientiane

Wednesday - 26 Mar 2003
Laos

I have never seen a capital as relaxed and laid-back as Vientiane.

Walking the streets of Vientiane is occasionally like walking in a tiny sleepy little village. The traffic is slow and sparse. The wats are everywhere and the monks wearing their orange robe are silently strolling the on sidewalks, giving you the impression of peacefulness. Few houses are more than 3 storeys high, which give you a small town feeling.

“Sabaidee” is heard on each corner, meaning hello. The Lao people are extremely smiling and they have a kindness and calmness written allover.

Watching the sunset at the Mekong River fits beyond words the feelings you get for Vientiane. The warmth and the beauty that the Mekong is reflicting must have rubbed off on the Lao people.
