Hiking Around

Coffee Bay , Eastern Cape - South Africa

Samuel the Shepard

On the hills above Coffee Shack, we encountered this young Xhosa child keeping an eye on his donkeys, busy grazing around these rolling hills of sheer splendor.

Rondavels

Hiking around Coffee Bay is like entering another South Africa. Populated mainly with Xhosa people living traditionally out of mud huts.

Because their society is still intact, crime is minimal and only amounts to occasional petty theft.

Molo / Hello

Children came running to meet the strangers. Mesmerized by our digital cameras, they wouldn’t let us go easily.

The Maiden

The children’s excitement attracted this young lady, who was wondering what all the fuss was about. She gratefully agreed to a picture.

The white markings on her face is an ointment for sun protections that some use for ornamation as well.

Rascals

Once these lads figured out that we weren’t handing out coins or candy, they decided to ham it up for our camera.

Earning their Keep

These young men were too busy helping their families acquire protein to be chasing tourists around.

Even 5 and 6 year olds can be found with a stink and string scouting along water’s edge.
