A few excursions

Puerto Vallarta - Mexico

O.K. so I did do a few things during the week, but let me tell you it was NOT EASY to get energetic with all those cheap beverages! I took a local bus to another beach Mismaloya on day. While lounging I saw a trail leading up into the mountain, so decided to take a gander. It turns out that it led to the remains of the scene where "Night of the Iguana" was shot. Huffing and puffing up the hill, there really was very little to see, but the view from the top was fabulous. Plus I was extra thirsty once I returned! There's a huge hotel at this beach named "La Joya de Mismaloya", try saying that 10 times fast after a few margaritas! The day was all in all pretty fine, but I was glad to get back to the Burros Bar in time for Happy Hour #2. I feel a word on the Burros bar is due. This place is a MUST DO if you ever get to Puerto Vallarta. O.K. so it's just a bunch of thatched palapas on the beach, but the waiters are a riot. Israel (yep his real name) is a handsome young man, with a dry sense of humour..great for exchanging one liners. The star of the show is Johnny. He doesn't look mexican, he's quite short and has a somewhat scratchy/squeeky voice, and a wicked sense of humour. Towards the end of the week, I was sitting in the bar when a couple arrived (obviously new, pasty skinned) and ordered a bucket of beer and Chicken Enchiladas from Johnny. He came back a few moments after having delivered their meals and straight-faced asked " How's the Pelican?". They both stopped eating mid-bite and stammered "Pelican? We ordered Chicken!", to which he replied " Well normally it's chicken but today eees Pelican", and wandered away winking at me. Amid guffaws and almost choking on my drink I assured them it was all a joke. They did not have a very good sense of humour.

The next excursion I took was to the town of El Tuito. If you're ever in this neck of the woods, don't bother. I just picked it off a map, and decided to see what was there. The bus was 45 min. late(what's new?), the trip to El Tuito only lasted 45 minutes! The bus wove it's way along the twisting mountaibn roads and deposited me in a dusty town of about 30 people, at siesta time, not exactly lively. I managed to get a cheese enchilada off a shop keeper, and then sat down by the road to await the return bus. I never bothered to ask about the schedule before I embarked on this little jaunt! The return bus lumbered into town about 3 hours later, and I headed straight for the Burros Bar. A final word on one of Puerto Vallarta's charms. Sitting on the beach you can see dolphins playing in the waves and the many pelicans swooping down to catch fish, it's beautiful. One day I actually saw a whale frolicking out in the bay (and you thought I just did nothing all day!!)
