Jan and Nevena

Belgrade - Serbia

A Man with a Plan

Five months ago Jan was living on the streets. He would be wet when it rained. Now he is a postcard baron on the main tourist plaza in downtown Belgrade. He has about 5 stands that are open 14 hours a day. He has about a dozen employees who are very glad to have him as a boss.

Nevena took him in last year when he was in dire straits. She also nursed him to health after a nasty street fight left him with amnesia for 3 days. For that she has earned his everlasting devotion.

Our Good Fortune

Jan took a liking to us within 5 minutes of our first meeting and invited us to stay at his home. There was only one place to sleep which he offered to us. Nevena had a small apartment and they would sleep there.

Their generosity was amazing. Everything they had they shared with us. We were constantly asked if we wanted something. If so it was instantly procured. It was a real stuggle for us to return any favors.

A Good Lesson

I consider myself generous, but I definitely had some things to learn from Jan. All of his friends were polite to us and they struggled to keep the conversation in English so that we would feel included.

Helene and I were both impressed.
