Zanzibar - Spice Island

Nutmeg.

Zanzibar Spices

Zanzibar is also known as Spice Island (and you can taste them in every bite!). We saw many spices growing on plantations including lemongrass, vanilla, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom. We also sampled exotic fruit like breadfruit, Zanzibar apples, starfruit, a Zanzibar type of starfruit that puckered Rick up! - and he ate the whole thing.

Pass the chipati!

Spice Tour Lunch

After our tour, we were treated to a Swahili lunch (cooked with some of the spices that we sampled in the morning) consisting of coconut curry King fish, Indian vegetable curry, herbed spinach, cardamom rice and sesame seed chipati. Fresh fruit was served for dessert. We then toured a Persian bath, coral cave and took our first dip in the Indian Ocean.
