I know, I know, it's been far too long since I've written here. Lets hope that the sun, the surf and the beer have not fried my brain so much that I can no longer remember where I've been and what I've done. As it is, I think the dates might be a bit off, but that's mainly because most of the time I have no idea what the date is, and have to check the computer for that information.
I'm currently in Cairns, but want to keep some sort of order in this journal, so I'll write about Yeppoon and Great Keppel, especially since GK was one of the best places I've been to. There's not much to say about Yeppoon -I stayed for a day since I thought there was a beach there, and there isn't. Yeppoon also has the honor of being directly on the Tropic of Capricorn, thus earning it the nickname of "Capricorn Coast." Not much coast there though. You've been warned.
From Yeppoon, I took a large ferry over to Great Keppel Island, where I stayed at Holiday Village. The Island is fairly large, but only parts of it are developed. I did some snorkeling there, and saw lots of fish and even a sea snake. Quite honestly, the snake scared the hell out of me, and I swam rapidly in the opposite direction right after glimpsing it, but from dry land I can picture it in my memory as an exciting experience. The snake was white, with kind of a pinkish-gray shimmer to it, and actually quite pretty if you were viewing it from behind a glass wall. SNorkeling always makes me feel as though I am in a giant fishtank. At first I kept looking around for the glass wall, thinking that any moment I would bump into it. Great Keppel also had beautiful beaches, perfect for watching the sunset at night. Sigh. If only my girlfriend was watching with me, it would have been perfect!
I stayed on the island for 2 days and one night, then caught the ferry to Yeppoon and the hostel shuttle bus to the Rockhampton bus station. I know these details aren't the most interesting, but I need to keep a record of this for my own memory. You'll like it better when I put the photos in, I promise. The next segment will be even better, since I actually did something other then lie on the beach, but it will have to wait a few days since I'm off on a 3 day desert tour tomorrow. bye!
