The red soil in the area is stunning...

Boreas Pass - Part 1

On the weekend, we drove up to Boreas Pass along a road that follows a railway line that was built in the 1800's.

Hiking up Mount Baldy

The restored Station House is just below the Continental Divide - and we couldn't help climbing it.

Wildflowers on Mount Baldy

If you haven't already noticed, Rick likes photographing wild flowers. It gives Janet a chance to rest. These are found almost everywhere, even as high as 12,000 ft.

More wildflowers

I'm not sure if this is a lilly or orchid, but I found one in the meadow at the foot of Mt. Baldy.

Here we are below the tree line

Boreas Pass - Part 2

On Saturday evening, Janet's cousin Warren joined us with his children Jacob and Ella. Jacob headed out to the spectacular Boreas Pass with us for some more hiking. This time, we climbed up the Hoosier Ridge (part of the Continental Divide). We saw some old and abandoned mines and more spectacular views.

'What are you doing on my land, monkey boys!'

Mountain rodents

There are many of these - we've seen and identified pikas, yellow-bellied moarmots, and ferrets. Not sure what this is though. If anyone can identify this creature, please send us a note.

Here we are atop Quandry, with Pacific Peak behind

Mount Quandry

It was time to deprive ourselves of oxygen again. We headed up Quandry Peak, elevation 14,265. This was our 4th 14er (that's why Janet's showing 4 fingers - she pulled the short straw and had to take her hand out of her glove). It was supposed to be easier than the others, but we didn't think so. We left the trailhead at 0730 and didn't summit until 1215. As you can see from the picture - it was bloody cold and windy.

I didn't feel too bad, I didn't shave either.

Mountain goats

No trip to the Rockies would be complete without mountain goats. We saw these guys on our way down.
