Cape Cross

Namibia

100 km. or so north of Swakopmund, you’ll find Cape Cross. This is supposed to be the place where the first white man, Capt. Diaz from Portugal, putted down his foot on Namibian ground. He planted a cross, and therefore the name Cape Cross.

Besides from the historic point, there’s a huge colony of Cape fur seals. There should be around 100.000 in the area. When we got out of our car, the smell hit us like a brick wall, it was like all 100.000 have just farted……… Or they had just eaten fish, which is probably more likely.

The beach was plastered with the seals. The bulls were fighting, some of the females were sunbathing after a swim in the cold ocean and the small ones played or screamed out for there mom. It actually sounded like a farm of goats.

It was a fantastic sight with so many seals, and the sun sinking into the ocean.
