Pai
After a hectic week in Bangkok we decided to head up north for some rest & relaxation. This was accomplished after an overnight train ride to Chiang Mai and a five hour (told it was three) overcrowded, bumpy ride on a local bus up a very windy and steep road to Pai.
Pai is a small artsy type town where the main mode of transportation is the motoscooter. Here is Rick in front of a Chinese village outside of Pai.
Yeah!!!! Here we finally have our much needed R & R! This is Rick relaxing on a bamboo raft on the Pai River as seen from the front balcony of our private bungalow! The setting was quite spectacular and very restful as you can see!
Outside of Pai there is a waterfall and local watering hole where many local children spend their day cooling off. We arrived just as it was starting to rain and scooted quickly back before the downpour.
Pai is known as an area for growing garlic. The sight and smell was unmistakable!
To start our Thai cooking course we first went to the market. Here we learnt how to identify and select our fresh ingredients.
These are the raw ingredients for our gourmet feast. The mortar and pestle was widely used in making our red & green curry pastes. It certainly doesn’t get any fresher than this!
Here we are about to enjoy the fruits of our labour….Mmm good!
These live insects are sold on the street markets and did NOT get included in our cooking course or food selections!
This little critter watched us eating our breakfast at the outside dining area in Pai!
Here's Rick holidng an elephant under water. Guess Rick was angry because the elephant threw Rick in the drink.
Here we engage in another local custom as we watch the sun set on the mountains just outside of Pai.
