Lake Taupo
The gorgeous view of the volcanic mountains Mounts Ruapehu, Ngaurohoe, and Tongariro from across Lake Taupo enticed us for some mountain trekking. Mt Ruapehu last erupted in 1995 and 1996.

Tongariro Crossing
We headed out on the Tongariro crossing across the south crater and climbed Mt Tongariro, with a beautiful view of Mt Ngaurohoe, aka Mt Doom of Lord of the Rings fame.
