Shifting Sands

Shifting Sands , near Ngorongoro Crater - Tanzania

Note Rick and Bosco on the mound.

Shifting Sands

Many years ago, Mount Oldonyo Longai, an active volcano, spewed out a pile of sandy/black sand. The amazing thing is that this sand has retained it's mound shape, 10's of miles from it's origin, and the fairly constant wind has been blowing it in the same direction for years! Back in the 60's, someone noted this phenomenon and marked the location of the mound. We followed these markers for about a mile form the 1964 marker to its present location – virtually a straight line.

2000 marks the spot.

Sacred Site

The Masi people consider this a sacred site. The make sacrifices here during times of draught and women make sacrifices here when they can’t get pregnant.

p.s. Note that in the photo, the recently circumcised young man is sneaking a man's blanket!
