Chobe National Park , Northern Botswana - Botswana

African Buffalo resting in the shade

Botswana is the only country in Southern Africa without debt, thanks to diamonds, beef and tourism. With the Kalahari Desert located in the middle of Botswana, there are few roads and getting around is difficult and expensive. We travelled through the north only.

Our stay in Chobe was only 2 days and included a short game drive and boat cruise.

Here are our highlights...

Monitor lizard on dry river bed

Vultures waiting for a carcass

Elephants heading down to the water for a drink

Chobe has a huge population of elephants. We saw many during our game drive and watched them crossing the river during our boat cruise.

Female kudus - note no horns.

The antelopes pictured here are kudus. They are the second tallest antelope in Africa and come with 6 - 10 stripes down the side. They eat a variety of leaves but prefer woodland-savanah with dense bush cover. Males are usually solitary, joining females and their young during mating season.

Male kudu - note spiral horns

Hippos - note rain drops in the water

These hippos were chillin' in the river during our boat cruise. Note the ominous storm lighting. We actually saw one YAWN, but it was over before a camera could be aimed.
